As per Ashwini Vaishnaw, the union minister of electronics and information technology, India is in negotiations with the 29 members of the Global Partnership on Artificial Intelligence (GPAI) to reach an agreement on a declaration statement regarding the appropriate application of AI, the boundaries for the technology, and how it should be handled.

“The world’s thinking on AI is converging. People understand the potential, look to the benefits which can come, and understand the dangers and put certain guardrails. There is convergence on how AI should be treated going forward,” Vaishnaw said at the curtain raiser GPAI 2023 Summit.

The GPAI, a global alliance of 29 countries such as the US, the UK, EU, Germany, Israel, Singapore, Australia, Belgium, France and others to “guide the responsible development and use of artificial intelligence, grounded in human rights, inclusion, diversity, innovation and economic growth”.

The first three GPAI summits were held in Montreal, Paris, and Tokyo, respectively. India, which took over the presidentship of the GPAI in November last year, will host the 3-day summit from Tuesday. It will be inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, as per economic times.

At this year's summit, India will also collaborate with other GPAI members to examine how AI may be used to improve sustainable agriculture and collaboration, particularly in the areas of digital public infrastructure, according to Vaishnaw.

“The thinking is how do we create a platform, a collaborative structure in which the development of AI, its applications and solutions can be democratised and made available to a much broader spectrum of people,” Vaishnaw said.
